THE SURF SHACK

When you tire of marveling at the view and soaking up the atmosphere of Butterfly Bay, take a hop, skip and jump to the Surf Shack on the beach.  Something for all moods here, whether you want to relax and fly a kite or do something more invigorating such as boogie boarding.
 
Also available:  Fishing rods and tackle, petanque, croquet, volleyball, cricket, snorkels, masks and flippers, frisbees.

Too energetic?  try the swing, Butterfly Bay will bring out the child in you!

You've explored the endless possibilities of the Surf Shack, now it's time for less energetic pursuits, such as reading from the wide selection of books, listening to music, playing chess, watching the beautiful Monarch butterflies flitting around the Pohutukawa trees.

Creating Memories

Capture the essence of pure New Zealand.  Take a boat, catch Scallops, Crayfish, fish and Paua. Find a deserted beach, collect driftwood for a fire.  Shuck your own Scallops - cook it all up.


Big Game Fishing

The thrill of a big catch is an unrivalled experience and if you have 'the bug' there are a variety of Big Game Fish charters just 10 minutes away at Whangaroa Harbour.

Scuba Diving

Local dive charters are available from Whangaroa and offer world class diving experiences. Dive the Rainbow Warrior wreck! - sunk at the nearby Cavalli Islands.

The Greenpeace flagship was sunk here in 1987 and is now an underwater haven with fantastic sea anemones creating a hugely colourful display and is home to thousands of fish and other fascinating sea life.  It is a dive requiring medium skills as it has been placed in a sheltered area with a maximum depth of 90 feet.

This is an unforgettable dive and an absolute must while you are in New Zealand.


Kayaking

Explore the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour and the Marlin Coast.  Spot the Dolphins! Guided Kayak tours are available locally.


Golf

Play the world class Kauri Cliffs course situated along the coast near Matauri Bay, just a short scenic drive from Butterfly Bay. 

Courses also at:  KerikeriMangonui, Whangaroa, Waitangi in the Bay Of Islands, and Carrington Club in the Far North. 

Scenic Walks

Department Of Conservation walks are highly recommended.  The walking tracks are well maintained, and range from short board walks through native forest, discovering the magnificent ancient Kauri trees and wide variety of native plants and birds, to coastal hikes with stunning vistas and secluded beaches. Take a picnic and experience nature at it's best.


Scenic Flights

Salt Air offer spectacular scenic flights by aeroplane or helicopter from Paihia and Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands. 


Cuisine

Take a scenic drive to Kerikeri just 40 minutes away by car. This small, bustling town, was recently voted New Zealands 'Top Small Town' and has many cafes and restaurants to choose from. Among them are: Marsden Estate and Cottle Creek wineries, and award winning cafes, The Fishbone and The Rocket.

In the other direction just 30 minutes from Butterfly Bay is Mangonui, where you will find the world famous Mangonui fish and chip shop as well as quaint cafes and pubs.

Whangaroa Gamefish Club is just around the corner from Butterfly Bay, join in with the locals celebrating the catch of the day.

Why go anywhere, cook up your own catch on the BBQ at Butterfly Bay, enjoy peace and tranquility, and the view!

Sightseeing

Whangaroa  -  Historic harbour, a land of legends, towering rock faces and 'Marlin Capital' of New Zealand.  Here you will find the Whangaroa Big Game Fishing Club.  Harbour cruises and fishing charters can be booked here.  Just 10 minutes away from Butterfly Bay.

Kerikeri - Known as 'Cradle Of The Nation'.

The Maori grew large crops of Kumera here before the Pakeha arrived, and it was here that the first agricultural plough was introduced to New Zealand. 

In the same area is Rewa's Maori Village, The Stone Store and Kemp House, New Zealand's oldest surviving building made of wood.

Follow the Craft Trail and shop for Maori souvenirs at Kerikeri's arts and crafts stores and workshops.

Mangonui - A charming historic port and early Maori settlement. A must see!
An 18th century whaling port and important port for shipping of Kauri timber and gum. Today it is renowned for it's craft shops, cafes, New Zealand pubs and the Famous Mangonui Fish Shop. Take an afternoon drive for "fush 'n' chups" and a beer at one of the local pubs. Soak up the atmosphere of this quaint little town.
